We can all do one thing…
Climate change is the biggest challenge we face. ‘Going green’ is now not a lifestyle choice, it’s a choice for life, and even small changes – if made by a large number of people – can make a huge difference.
Sustainability presents many challenges: reduced energy consumption; higher efficiency; longer product life; increased use of renewable energy and less dependency on fossil fuels; local energy generation.
Everyone must play their part.
Compressors
For over 60 years, Panasonic has been developing and producing compressors for a wide variety of applications. Manufacturers globally choose Panasonic compressors, for e.g., refrigerators, heat pumps, and air conditioners, because of their reliability and energy efficiency. Decades of innovation led to an extensive portfolio of compressors that feature, for example, rare earth magnets, optimized oil/refrigerant ratios, or variable-speed inverter compressors with natural refrigerants that match their speed according to the demand to operate highly efficiently.
The compressor lineup features rotary, scroll, or reciprocating compressors, available with fixed or variable speeds. And all compressors from Panasonic Industry share these key characteristics: they are highly efficient, durable, and provide reliable performance.

Amorphous Solar Cells
Amorton
Even in low or artificial light conditions, solar cells can harvest energy to power devices. Calculators, wristwatches, and remote controls are just a few examples.
Panasonic Industry’s Amorphous silicon solar cells (Amorton) provide power to these products. But the possibilities of the Amorton technology are much broader, especially when it comes to applications for small communication devices centered around IoT applications.
Instead of changing primary batteries of helpful devices that surround us daily, the Amorton technology offers a sustainable and efficient solution. Panasonic Industry’s Amorton cells enable energy harvesting for home applications or professional solutions like sensors, security devices, electronic shelf labels, wearables, picking systems, remote controllers, beacon terminals, or trackers. Because Amorton can harvest energy even from LED lighting indoors, maintenance and design of IoT applications can be elegant and eco-friendly at the same time. The Amorton portfolio comprises thin, lightweight, and even flexible cells that can be used indoors or outdoors. Also, a combination of different Amorton cells is possible to provide a customized solution that follows a given shape and desired power output.
PaPIRs: Panasonic’s Passive Infrared or Pyroelectric (PIR) Motion Sensors
Sensors are a key enabling technology for energy efficiency. Smart homes, smart workplaces and smart cities all rely on accurate information regarding the presence and movement of people.
Passive infrared and pyroelectric motion sensors are used widely in lighting controls, security cameras/alarms, home appliances, and many other applications. More recently, the Covid Pandemic has resulted in new application, such as the turning on of displays that encourage use of disinfectant when people walk past. These motion sensors can be effectively combined with IoT technologies, for example, to communicate the availability of meeting rooms and restaurants, as well as record in-store movement to collect large amounts of data.
Panasonic Industry Europe is a leader in this market with a huge portfolio of PIR motion sensors, optimized to various applications.

Lithium batteries: the perfect fit for demanding industrial applications
Panasonic's CR series Lithium cylindrical batteries feature a long-term reliability, an operating temperature range between -40°C and +85°C, a self-discharge rate at 20°C of just 1.0% per year, stable impedance throughout the battery life, and superior high drain discharge performance. Our batteries can power applications such as meters, smoke detectors, car alarms, marine devices, tracking & RFID products, etc.
Nickel Metal Hydride long life back-up batteries for solar-powered applications
These very tough Ni-MH batteries offer a very long service life when using intermittent charging in high ambient temperature conditions (≤75°C for certain types). Moreover, these batteries are ideal as a replacement for standard Ni-Cd batteries. They are recommended for use in applications such as emergency lighting, servers, elevators, automated teller machines (ATMs), solar powered devices and as a back-up for base stations.
Relays
Smart meters and intelligent power distribution systems, enabled by a Cloud-based IoT infrastructure will help us consume less energy and minimize energy wastage. Panasonic Industry Europe has one of the crucial building blocks for such applications - polarized power relays, including industry’s smallest components, the 8A DSP series.
Panasonic invented the polarized relay 50 years ago. A permanent magnet is employed to increase the magnetic force of the coil, therefore less electric power is used to switch the contacts. Since its invention in the 1960’s, we estimate that Panasonic energy efficient polarized relays have saved the industry 3 billion kWh of energy in Europe. In the next 10 years with the move to smart homes, smart offices, smart factories, and smart cities, we expect this to increase significantly.
Latching relays are also energy efficient as they require no power to remain in one switching state once activated.
PhotoMOS® relays also contribute to energy saving thanks to their very low power consumption. And because PhotoMOS® have no mechanical parts there is no arcing or abrasion, so the lifetime is virtually unlimited. Therefore, they contribute to sustainability and maintenance costs are minimized.
Capacitors and Power Choke Coils
Every electrical system requires power. Yet every time power is converted – either via an AC/DC power supply or a DC/DC power converter - there will be power loss.
Panasonic Industry Europe offers a wide range of passive solutions including hybrid and film capacitors and power choke coils that contribute to energy-efficient power conversion by minimizing power conversion losses.
Power inductors guarantee high reliability and stability during lifetime thanks to a metal composite core made up of iron-based metal powder and a resin binding system. This high-quality design ensures excellent electrical and mechanical characteristics even in harsh environments like low AC resistance loss, efficient thermal dissipation, miniaturization, and stable inductance value even at high currents and temperatures. Metal composite inductors also show very low DCR values which can help to enhance power efficiency when used in input filters and DC/DC converter applications.
In addition to power inductors, hybrid aluminum electrolytic capacitors, which are the combination of liquid electrolyte and polymer, can contribute to high efficiency levels by offering a very low and stable ESR. Thanks to the liquid electrolyte, hybrid capacitors offer a very stable leakage current behavior as well as a highly conductive polymer material both of which reduce noise in designs.
For applications that require even more safety, Panasonic Industry’s film capacitor fuse function technology is the most suitable. Moreover, the high humidity resistance of Panasonic film capacitors is ideal for applications used outdoors or exposed to high humidity.
Thermal Interface Materials
Excess heat is a system killer. Even if a system continues to run, if it is operating above a specified temperature then it will not be performing efficiently. Both situations have serious consequences of the sustainability. Conversely, if systems can be kept cool – or at least within specified limits – then system life will increase, and performance will be optimized.
Heat produced by components such as power semiconductors must be dissipated via heat sinks and fans. Traditionally, grease has been used as the interface material ensuring that no bubbles of heat-trapping air exist between heat producing component and cold wall. GraphiteTIM graphite sheet is a better, more sustainable, and longer life solution.
Smart gas metering
Rapid climate change means we must reduce our dependency to fossil fuels. Natural gas, which is a big CO2 contributor in the global energy mix, must be progressively replaced, first with biogas and eventually with decarbonized hydrogen. The first step in this process involves injecting biogas and hydrogen into the existing gas grid, and industry is rapidly ramping up to meet this new demand.
At Panasonic Industry Europe, we offer key components for smart gas meters, including ultrasonic gas flow and concentration sensors which work flawlessly with a mix of natural Gas, biogas, and Hydrogen – this is industry's first sensor that enables real-time simultaneous measurement in a humid environment.
Other important smart gas metering components from Panasonic - shut-off valves, RF solutions, sensors - enhance reliability, enabling 24/7 operation for decades in tough environments, with high safety levels detecting leakage, abnormal behavior, or even seismic activity.
