The upcoming Electrical + Electronic systems in Hybrid and Electric vehicles (EEHE) conference taking place on June 13th and 14th  in Essen, Germany, is hosting renowned speakers from the automotive industry, dedicated to topics related to the strong growth in electromobility and the associated successful market launch of highly electrified vehicles.

During the session “High Voltage & Charging Safety” on June 13th,  M.Sc. Chaithra Bhat Beedubail, Product Manager Relay Electronics from Panasonic Industry Europe in Ottobrunn near Munich, will touch the cosmos of high voltage systems in EV cars and speak on the required safety functions like isolation monitoring or high voltage measurement in the battery management system (BMS).

Her lecture will offer an approach how to realize isolation monitoring circuits by using HV MOSFET relays with galvanic isolation between input and output circuit. The fast-switching electronic MOSFET relays can be used for leakage current detection between the car chassis and the HV battery. A component analysis shows the special characteristics that engineers must take care of to avoid improper selections. Subjects are e.g., defined switching behavior (DIC), low leakage current, fast turn-on and turn-off times and stable ON resistance over the entire lifetime.

Next to that, she will discuss a possibility of a safe and galvanic isolated high voltage measurement realization. MOSFET relays are used as fast electronic switches to connect a high-impedance resistor chain to a shunt resistance. The corresponding voltage drop on this shunt resistor is direct proportional to the voltage which should be measured. An example of such a high voltage measurement with PhotoMOS® is to monitor the battery pack voltage as an indication to the actual state of charge (SoC), which in turn can extend battery life and prevent hazardous situations.

Chaithra Bhat Beedubail refers to the market-leading offer of Automotive grade PhotoMOS® semiconductor relays that bring several HV switching functions in small & lightweight DIP6 or DIP8 housings to simplify circuit designs and save space and components on the PCB.

Save the date – and do not miss Chaithra’s valuable contribution on June 13th at 4 p.m. during this must-attend event for manufacturers, suppliers, development partners and employees of universities and research institutions, coming together to re-think the EV ecosystem.
